What is MIG-MAG Welding?

MIG-MAG welding is an electric arc welding method that connects metals using voltage and heat input. During this process, a wire is continuously fed mechanically towards the workpiece, serving as both the electrode and the filler material. The wire melts along with the workpiece, creating a weld pool. Shielding gas is used to protect this weld pool from oxidation, as without it, the electric arc would overheat the material. Once cooled, a strong weld joint is formed.

The Difference Between MIG and MAG Welding

The primary difference between MIG (Metal Inert Gas) and MAG (Metal Active Gas) welding lies in the type of gas used. MIG employs an inert gas like argon that does not react with the weld pool, while MAG uses an active gas like CO2, which does react. This can affect the quality of the weld, but CO2 is much cheaper than argon. Often, mixtures of inert and active gases are used to achieve optimal results.

Making a Good MIG-MAG Weld

Various processes are possible within MIG-MAG welding, such as spray arc welding, short arc welding, and pulsed arc welding. The choice depends on the material and thickness being welded. Spray arc welding is suitable for thicker materials due to high voltage and current. For thinner materials, short arc welding or pulsed welding is preferred. Pulsed welding alternates between two current levels, resulting in less heat and fewer weld spatter.

When to Choose MIG/MAG Welding?

MIG/MAG welding is economically appealing due to its speed and efficiency. For aluminum and stainless steel, MIG or a gas mixture is used, while MAG is ideal for steel due to the low cost of CO2. The technique is suitable for a wide range of materials and thicknesses, offering high welding speed and good weld quality. Although post-processing is often needed due to weld spatter, MIG/MAG welding is universally applicable and provides good oxidation protection.
